John J. Solomon, Ph.D. Lansing Age 84, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and caregivers on February 3, 2013. He was born July 20, 1928, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to Alex and Freda Solomon. John was a graduate from J.W. Sexton High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War as a first lieutenant with medical services. He went on to earn his bachelor's from Michigan State University, a Master of Science, and Ph.D. in Philosophy. He worked as a microbiologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. John was instrumental on the team that created and patented the vaccine for Avian Marek's Disease. He is survived by nephews, Robert (Liz) Solomon and Bruce Courey; nieces, Paula, Betty and Peggy Solomon and Nancy Tickner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nina A. (Hess) in July 2010; brother, Robert A. Solomon; and sisters, Mary Courey and Anna Nightingale. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his loving caregivers Nancy, B.J., Tamara, Dawn, and Ann. At John's request cremation has taken place and there will be an interment of his and wife Nina's ashes following the service of both Robert and Pauline Solomon 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013 at St. David's Episcopal Church Memorial Garden, 1519 Elmwood Rd., Lansing, Michigan 48917. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to . Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
