Kurt J. Becker, age 93, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014 in Bradenton, Florida. He was born on November 26, 1920 in Greenville, Michigan, the son of Frederik and Elise (Sievert) Becker. Kurt graduated from Greenville High School in 1939 and attended Central Michigan University for three and a half years, leaving to join the US Marine Corp in WWII. He served in the South Pacific on Guadalcanal, Guam, and Okinawa. Mr. Becker did occupational duty in Tsingtao, China, after the declaration was signed.
After the war, Kurt moved to St. Johns and was associated with Dean Hardware for 19 years. In 1965 he opened his own business, Kurt's Appliance Center. Kurt retired from that business in 1986. He was a member of First Congregational Church, having served as chairman of the board and trustee for 8 years. Mr. Becker also belonged to the St. Johns Rotary Club for 55 years and served as president from 1961-1962. He served on the St. Johns Parks and Recreational Board for 18 years and was a trustee of Clinton Memorial Hospital for 32 years. Mr. Becker was on the board of directors of Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor / Clinton Area Care Center for 4 years and a trustee for 14 years. Kurt was past president and member of the Mt. Rest Cemetery Board for 27 years. He belonged to the American Legion Post # 153 for 37 years.
Kurt married Mary Jean Young on June 25, 1944 and she preceded him in death on September 22, 2000. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Julius and Ernie and a sister, Ann Dean. Mr. Becker is survived by two sons, Scott (Nancy) of St. Johns and Thomas of Denver, CO; granddaughters, Erika (Ben) Hinson of Midland, MI, and Shannon (Eric) Freling of Pittsburgh, PA; special friend, Dorothy Lundquist of Venice, FL; nephews, Gary (Barbara) Becker of St. Johns, Barry Dean of Venice, FL, Robert (Joyce) Becker of Wyoming, MI, and David (Angie) Becker of Holiday, FL; nieces, Barbara Coletta of Bradenton, FL, Kay Ann Hunter of Grayling, MI, and Janet (Jim) Warthman of Alma, MI.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2014 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns. Military honors will be provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive relatives and friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2014 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. Johns Rotary Club, P.O. Box 482, St. Johns, MI 48879.
