Lloyd Lyna Hammond Traverse City Lloyd Lyna Hammond, age 85, died of natural causes on December 26, 2012 in Traverse City MI. Lloyd was born in St. Johns MI on October 24, 1927 to Bertha Ellen (Darnell) Hammond and Lyna Hammond. He is survived by his wife, Mercedes Anne (Rinkle) Hammond, his children, Valary Anne (Hammond) Schroeder of Honor MI, Vikki Lynne (Hammond) Scull of Naperville IL, and Lloyd Lee (Lee) Hammond of Dimondale MI. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Leroy Earl Hammond. Lloyd was graduated from Durand High School in 1945 and attended Michigan State University as a student of agriculture while also beginning his career as a farmer. He married Mercedes in 1948. They resided on his farm near Dimondale for 10 year before moving to a home in East Lansing in 1960. They resided in the East Lansing home for over 40 years until they moved to Traverse City in 2008. Lloyd and Mercedes purchased a large farm north of East Lansing in 1958 and farmed there until the mid 1980's. During that time Lloyd was awarded the honor of being named Onion King in 1960 as well as being runner-up in several other years. The award was given to the grower who was able to produce the most onions per acre nationwide and was an accomplishment he was very proud of. In addition, he was also recognized for his production in carrots, radishes, and potatoes which he grew for Campbell's and Heinz. His produce was also sold at farm markets throughout mid-Michigan. Lloyd was a member of the Lions Club of East Lansing. After selling the farm, Lloyd and Mercedes began a new business as distributors of automotive supplies in Michigan. They ran that business until 2004 when they finally retired for good. They spent several of their retirement years wintering in Mesa, Arizona. If you would like, donations in Lloyd's honor may be made to the . There will be a celebration of Lloyd's life from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 22, 2013 at the home of his son, Lee Hammond 2255 S. Waverly Rd., Dimondale MI. Before his death, Lloyd had expressed his wish that we hold a "party and have fun" in lieu of a funeral. Anyone interested in attending will be most welcome.
