Marco Scarpetta Obituary
Marco Anthony Scarpetta

Died on August 7, 2014.  Devoted husband of Linda and loving father of Julia.  Marco was born in Seaford, NY and studied at Notre Dame International School (NDI) in Rome, Italy from 1973-1977.  He thrived at NDI, skipping a grade, winning the grade school spelling bee and making his acting debut in A Midsummer Night's Dream as a fourth grader.  He also became fluent in Italian and developed a deep appreciation for his Italian heritage.

After moving back to the U.S., Marco graduated from Mannheim Township High School in Lancaster, PA, where he was honored with a listing in Who's Who in American High Schools.  He earned a B.S. in Biology at Penn State University, an M.S. and PHD in Molecular Biology from the University of Maryland, and did postgraduate research at the University of Michigan.

Marco loved nature and was an enthusiastic outdoor athlete.  He enjoyed cycling, cross country skiing, hiking and inline skating.  He engaged in these activities as a member of the Solar Club, where he met Linda.  He was a voracious reader, particularly of espionage novels, and loved puzzles such as Sudoku.

Marco, Linda and Julia traveled extensively, including trips to Europe and many of the United States, often combining family visits with their favorite outdoor activities.

As a proud father, he took great joy in Julia and her many talents, which included ballet, tap, singing, and piano.  He never missed a recital or performance and regularly sent pictures of these events to his extended family with glowing words of pride and praise.

Marco was a true scientist, always looking for the simple, elegant solution.  He spent a portion of his career his career conducting forensic DNA and crime scene analysis.  He served as Director of Human Identity and Paternity Testing labs, and was a skilled teacher of physicians and other professionals and an expert witness in paternity and criminal cases.  He also started a human identity and paternity testing consulting firm.

Marco is survived by his wife Linda (neé Harner) and daughter Julia, brothers Robert and Paul, their wives Donna and Meg, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, August 11, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at St. Martha Parish, 1100 W. Grand River, Okemos, MI. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Ele's Place (www.elesplace.org), a healing center for grieving children.

The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing. On line condolences may be made at
