Mary M. Sandborn

Mary M. Sandborn, formerly of Lansing, passed away February 5, 2013 at her home in Escanaba surrounded by her family.

Mary was born June 18, 1920 in Portland, Michigan. She was the daughter of William and Nora (Bates) Young.

Mary married Bill Sandborn on June 17, 1944 at St. Patrick's Church in Portland. Bill preceded her in death on June 6, 2001. Mary was a proud member of St. Patrick's Church where she was baptized, married and now laid to rest.

Mary received her bachelor degree from Central Michigan University. She earned her master's degree in Special Education at Michigan State University while raising her five children and teaching full time. She taught at Genesee Street School, Holy Cross, Tower Garden and retired after an aspiring tenure at the Beekman Center. During her teaching career she touched and inspired thousands of mid-Michigan students.

Mary is survived by her son Michael of Eagle; daughter Sue (Ray) Cheatham of O'Fallon, MO, Pamela (Joe) Mileski of Escanaba, Patricia (Duane) Smith of Marenisco, and Cindy (Steve) Fabiano of Portland. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, sister JoAnn Sheehan of Lansing, several nieces and nephews, and many long-time friends.

Mary loved to travel. She visited Ireland, Alaska, most countries of Europe and the Caribbean. She loved taking her girls cruising. Mary shot a hole-in-one at Lake Isabella. She loved to play cards, knit, cook and volunteer for work at her parish in Plant City, Florida and St. Patrick's. Mary was a kind, generous, forgiving and always available mother, grandmother, GG and friend. She never missed a birthday, anniversary or special event with her immediate and extended family.

Mary was a devout Catholic and exercised her religion not only by attending mass daily, but also donating her tithe, time and efforts. Her faith was her guide in living her life and she set such a great example, in such a humble manner for all who were fortunate to know her in any capacity. She was truly a blue-collar saint. When death knocked on her door, she fixed her hair, finished her ice cream and welcomed the eternal life awaiting her in heaven.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church in Portland on June 17, 2014 at 10:30AM. This very special day marks Bill and Mary's 70th wedding anniversary and their remains will be laid to rest together at a private ceremony.
