Paul Kenneth Van Oordt Lansing Passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the age of 90. Paul was born on July 27, 1923 to the late Henry and Grace ( Holtron) Van Oordt in Spring Lake, MI. He attended high school in Spring Lake and graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1941. Paul entered the Army Air Corps where he received his wings and commission as a P-38 Pilot in WWII. He was a POW for 20 ½ months in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lt. and awarded the Purple Heart. Following his time at war he returned home to work in the masonry business with his family. Following his career as a brick layer he attended Ferris State University earning his B.A. and continued on to earn his M.A. from Western University. Paul dedicated 16 years to teaching in the Lansing School District. He was a member of the NEA, MEA, American ex-POWs, Military Order of Purple Heart, 82nd Fighter Group Association, Holt VFW, and First Presbyterian Church. Paul is preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years Doris Van Oordt, 2 son-in-laws, Earl Thompson and Terry Thompson, 4 brothers, and 1 sister. Paul is survived by his 3 daughters, Nancy Minarik, Susan Thompson, and Judy (David) Ruff, 6 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel with his grandson Kevin Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Tuesday.
