Ovid

Richard L. Young, 79, of Ovid, passed away Wednesday, May 14th, 2014 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in St. Johns.  

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday, May 19th at the United Church of Ovid, 131 W. Front Street, Ovid with Pastor Paul Damkoehler officiating.  Cremation will follow the service.  Visitation will be Saturday 1 PM to 8 PM and Sunday 2 PM to 8 PM at Mowen Funeral Home - William A. Scarlett Memorial Chapel, 409 West Main Street, Owosso.   Mr. Young will lie in state at the church on Monday from 10 AM until service.

Richard was born in Owosso, Michigan on September 11, 1934, the son of the late George and Irene (Macomber) Young.  He married Anne Kieffer on April 21, 1956; she predeceased him on September 5, 1974.  To this union 5 children were born and grieve his passing:  Cindy (Kim) Fruchey of Ovid, James (Penny) Young of Lake Odessa, Cathy (Keith) Jones of Ovid, Charlene (Bryan) Gruesbeck of Ovid and Carol (Keith) Mills of Owosso.  Richard later married Joyce Harmon on February 2, 1979 at the Duplain Church of Christ in Elsie.   He worked for General Motors in Lansing for 29 1/2 years, retiring in 1991.  He then worked at the Kroger Store in St. Johns for 15 years, retiring again in 2006. 

Richard enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre; watching NASCAR, playing golf and bowling.  

Survivors also include:  wife, Joyce of Ovid; step-children, Jamie Grennell of Perry, James Staley of Elsie; adopted son, Mark (Darcey Austin) Grennell; special granddaughter, Taner Grennell; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; several step grandchilden; brothers, Edward (Roberta) Young of Ovid, Robert Young of Port Augustine, Florida; sister, Barbara (Howard) Kieffer of Ovid; many nieces and nephews; and his dog, Buster.

He was preceded in death by step daughter, Julie Staley; brothers, Melvin, Floyd, Elmer, George and Paul; sister, Mary.

Memorials are suggested to the Hazel I. Findlay Activities Fund, 1101 S. Scott Road, St. Johns 48879.
