Thomas Walter Yates Lansing Thomas Walter Yates (82) of Lansing. Passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014. The youngest of seven siblings, Tom was born on 21 December 1931 to the late Arthur and Willhemina (Minnie) Yates in Detroit, MI. He graduated Pershing High School in 1949 where he lettered in both Baseball and Tennis. He entered the Army 101st Airborne Division, married and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska until an honorable discharge in 1953. After his military service, Tom and his family moved to Southfield, MI where he began a long career in the automotive industry as a draftsman, machine tool designer and system engineer, retiring from the Olofsson Corporation of Lansing, MI. He enjoyed winters in Myrtle Beach, air shows, sport games and crossword puzzles. Known for his keen intellect and kind, patient disposition, Tom brightened the lives of all who knew him and was a model of generosity and acceptance. Tom is preceded in death by his first wife Shirley Rose, his brothers Arthur, Elmer and John (Jack), and his sisters Betty Diegel and Leah Yates. Tom is survived by his loving wife Irene (Mutty) of 19 years, his Sister Rosemary Judson, his children Vene, Harry, Kimberlee Murray and their spouses; his step-children Karen Harkness, Paul Mutty, and Ann Marie Mutty and their spouses; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Tom's family will receive friends Friday, January 10 from 9:30 to 10:30 am at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow Hwy, Lansing, MI immediately followed by mass and a luncheon.
