William Elmer Lahti Haslett Bill Lahti, age 76 of Haslett, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 28, 2013. He was born to the late Edward and Aili Lahti in Aura, Michigan on January 15, 1937. After graduating from L'Anse High School in 1954, he attended Michigan State University and went on to teach Physical Education and 6th Grade from 1956-1961 at Madison Wilkinson Junior High School in Madison Heights, MI. Then from 1962 - 1967 he taught Physical Education and General Science at Bloomfield Hills Junior High School. In September of 1968 he returned to Michigan State where he obtained his Master's degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Bill worked teaching at several schools including Michigan Technological University, Central Michigan University, Carl Sandburg College and Michigan State University. Bill met his wife and lifetime companion, Dixie (Bricker) Lahti at Kandahar Barn while performing as a folk singer at the ski lodge in January of 1970. They were married on June 27, 1970 in Boyne City, Michigan. Bill and Dixie eventually settled down in Haslett, Michigan where they raised their 4 children. Bill enjoyed reading, gardening, and performing music. He was an accomplished folk singer and entertainer. Bill performed annually at the Aura Jamboree where he was born and raised. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Aili Lahti; brothers, Walfred, Dennis, Marvin; sister Bertha; and his son Edward Lahti. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Dixie Lahti; sons William (DeeLane) Lahti, Russell (Amanda) Lahti; daughter Aliisa Lahti; five grandchildren, Uriah, Aili, Ava, Aiden, and Emmaline; and the rest of his extended family and lifetime friends. A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Saturday, August 17, at Lake Lansing Park - North, Haslett, Michigan. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing.
