James Meredith White

ATHENS: James Meredith White, age 86, of Athens, died Monday morning, July 29, 2013 at Abbyshire Place in Gallipolis.

Born July 30, 1926 in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Thomas P. & Lena Bumpass White.

A 1944 graduate of Carroll High School, he received his B.S. Electrical Engineering in 1962 from Ohio University. He retired from Ohio University in 1989, where he taught electrical engineering, constructed the structures on Radar Hill, was Director of Utilities and Assistant Director of the Physical Plant. He also operated Jim White Contracting, where repaired and remodeled homes. He was a lifetime member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. After high school, he operated the family farm near Ashley, Ohio and worked at The Ohio State University Research Foundation. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He attended Albany Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Athens Country Club where he enjoyed golf. He was a member of the Green& White Club and the Ohio University Trustees Academy. A Cincinnati Reds baseball fan, he enjoyed bowling and gardening. He also enjoyed his time and golf buddies with the Old Codgers Golf Club.

Meredith is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marie Phillips White; his son & daughter in law, Geoff & Sonya White of Athens; a grandson, Brian White of Athens; and a sister in law, Betty Reeder White of Pa. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas P. White, Jr., William A. White and Charles F. White.

Funeral service will be conducted Thursday 11:00am at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Pastor Bert Christian and Pastor Carl Prokop officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery, Hebbardsville. Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8pm at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion, VFW Post 3477 and VFW Post 9893 Honor Guards at the cemetery.
