Richard M. (Dick) Wallace Obituary
Richard M. (Dick) Wallace

LAURELVILLE: Richard M. (Dick) Wallace, age 93, went home to the Lord on April 14, 2014. He was born in Newark, Ohio on May 6, 1920 to the late Eugene and Minnie (Webb) Wallace. Living as a child in Newark during Prohibition, he and his brothers would travel the streets pulling their wagon, selling their step-father's homemade wine door to door.

After graduation from Newark High, he hopped a freight train bound for Florida where he lived for a year. In 1940, he returned to Newark and married Ruth LeHew. A year later his son, whom they nicknamed "Dickie", was born. Soon after, Pearl Harbor was bombed and life as they knew it would change forever. After being drafted into the Army and completing basic training in

Texas, he applied for leave to be with his new son for Christmas. Due to the war, he was denied, so he took matters into his own hands, sold his possessions and went AWOL. A week later, he and Ruth were having lunch in the Sparta Restaurant when two MPs arrived to escort him back to Texas. In his usual calm and philosophical way, Dick remarked, "Well, I guess it's time I'm going back". He served in the Army Engineers during WWII and was involved in D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, North Africa and Italy.

After the war he held several jobs before helping to start K & G Lumber in Newark with Charlie Thompson, where he worked until retirement. During his marriage, he and Ruth adopted a beautiful baby girl, Mary Beth.

One of his biggest passions was playing golf. He hit his first hole-in-one when in his 70's. He especially enjoyed playing alongside his son and grandson, at the PGA Nationals course in West Palm Beach the day after the Senior's Tournament. He was a member of the Elks for 32 years and an Honorary Citizen of Boy's Town.

He is survived by his son, Richard J. (Carol) Wallace, of Hanover and daughter, Mary Beth (Joe) Weinle, of Milford, Ohio; three grandsons, Rick (Marsha) Wallace of Chatham, Randy (Wendy) Wallace of Boynton Beach, Florida and Mitchell Weinle of Loveland, Ohio; along with two great granddaughters, Kiana and Isabella; and step daughter, Mary Katherine Vandette and husband, Tom, with whom he made his home. He is also survived by their children and one great-grandson, Luke; in addition to his half sister, Mary Ellen (Schlosser) Chappelear; and many nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth (Lehew) Wallace, second wife, Elsie (Pugh) Wallace, and third wife, Joan (Crawford) Wallace in addition to his brothers, Michael Wallace and Harry "Doc" Wallace.

A memorial service will be held at a later time. Kauber-Sammons funeral home in Pataskala assisted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kobacker House Hospice, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43214.
