Columbus, Georgia- SFC (Ret) Bernerd P. Drury, age 83, resident of Columbus, died on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Carl Vinson VAMC, Dublin, Georgia. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 3 p.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home with police honors on Friday, August 16, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. in the St. Elmo Room.
Mr. Drury, son of the late William Henry Drury and Pearl Parrott, was born December 27, 1929 in Waverly, Georgia. He was a Master Mason, member of the Dothan Masonic Lodge #466, Dothan, Alabama. Mr. Drury was retired from the U.S. Army where he served his country honorably for over 21 years. During his distinguished military career, he served in both the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts and was awarded the Bronze Star and Vietnam Service Medals for his exemplary service. After retiring from the military, he began a career with the Columbus Police Department. Mr. Drury served many of those years as a Sergeant with Youth Services, and retired from the police department in 1991 with over 23 years of faithful service. Upon his retirement with the Columbus Police Department Mr. Drury continued to serve his community with the Muscogee County Sherriff's Department part-time as a bailiff.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Drury of Columbus; one daughter, Donna Tyer and her husband John of Phenix City, Alabama; two sons, William Drury and his wife Susan of Columbus and Steven Drury, also of Columbus; three sisters, Evelyn Kyser and her husband Bogie of Brunswick, Georgia, Wilhelmina Langrick of Deland, Florida, and Marilyn Langford and her husband George of Jackson, Georgia; four brothers, Elmer Drury and his wife Faye of Clarkville, Tennessee, Hoydt Drury and his wife Flo of Brunswick, Georgia, Morris Drury and his wife Faye of Brunswick, Georgia, and Dennis Drury and his wife Mary of Lakeland, Florida; four grandchildren, Chad Drury, Emily Drury, Aimee Drury and Crystal Isom and her husband James, all of Columbus; one great-grandson, Brodie Stephens; numerous nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
