Columbus, GA- Mr. Ernest Julius Hollis, Sr., 91, of Columbus, GA died Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Muscogee Manor and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:00 noon Friday, July 19, 2013, at Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, 1022 Adair Ave, Columbus, Rev. Benjamin McGruder, pastor officiating according to the Charles E. Huff's International Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Green Acres Cemetery. Viewing will be from 1:00pm until 6:00pm today at the funeral home located at 927-5th Avenue.
Mr. Ernest Julius Hollis, Sr. was born June 27, 1922, in Birmingham, AL to Virgil Hollis and Inez Vaughn White. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Hollis; mother, Inez Vaughn White; brother, Ocie Lee Hollis and grandson, William V. Hollis.
He was married to the late Ponjola D. Hollis on February 20, 1948 in Columbus, GA. The union of their marriage produced one son, SFC (Ret.) Ernest J. Hollis, Jr. and one daughter, Dr. Rhonda K. Hollis. They were married for 65years. He was a World War II Veteran who received an Honorable Discharge in 1947 and a Bronze Star Medal in 1944 for heroic achievement in action during his military service. Mr. Hollis accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age. He joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, now known as, Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, Columbus, GA upon discharge from the U.S. Army. While serving as a faithful member, he volunteered in various roles, such as Superintendent of Sunday School and Chairperson of the Men's Day Program. He retired from Civil Service employment at Martin Army Hospital, Ft. Benning, GA in 1982. He was a member of several organizations during his lifetime: Young Men's Progressive Club, AMVETS, American Legion and The Moderns Club, all of Columbus, GA where he served in several leadership roles.
He leaves to mourn one son, SFC (Ret.) Ernest J. Hollis, Jr. (Delphine); one daughter, Dr. Rhonda K. Hollis, both of Columbus, GA; a granddaughter, Katrina D. Hollis of Union City, GA; one sister-in-law, Lucy F. Beckum of Atlanta, GA; a devoted cousin, Emmett Vaughn of Salem, AL and a host of other relatives and friends.
