Columbus, GA- Sergeant First Class Sylvester Carey of Columbus passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Vista Care Hospice. He was 92 years of age and resided at 6372 Blanchard Court.
Born in Kint, OK on October 21, 1920, Sergeant Carey was the son of the late Porter and and Amie Kelley Carey. He was a Veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, retiring with over 20 years of dedicated service to his country. He was preceded in death by two sons, Corbet and Sylvester Carey, Jr., and two siblings, Colonel Milton Carey and A. D. Carey.
Survivors include: his wife of 44 years, Mrs. Gloria Carey; three sons, Wendall Carey, Sr., Dale Carey and Douglas Carey; one daughter, Shelley Carey; five grandchildren, Marcel Carey, Wendall Carey, Jr., Sylvester J. Carey, Sylvia Carey and Debra Watson; a brother, Howard Carey; loving nieces and nephews, Roberta McPherson, Sharon Samuel, Sandy Welborn and Willis Jones; a host of other relatives and friends.
Homegoing Services for Sergeant Carey will be Monday, November 19, 2012 at 11:30 am at the Chapel of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc. with Reverend James Hildebrand and Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. The interment will follow in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, 2 til 4:00 pm at the funeral home. The cortege will depart from the residence at 11:00 am the morning of the service.
