Columbus, GA- Wilbur Frank Mayo, 73, of Columbus, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Columbus Hospice. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Friday, May 16, 2014 at Beallwood Church of God, Columbus with Rev. Ken Savage officiating according to Cox Funeral Home, Manchester. Interment will follow in the Waverly Hall (GA) Cemetery with Jaime Duarte, Randy Patterson, David Patterson, Zach Patterson, Richard Hardy and Aaron Hiscox serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm, Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Mayo was born April 6, 1941 in Gabbettville, GA, the son of Franklin Theodore Mayo and Murl Grimes Mayo. He grew up in the Manchester area but spent his adult life in Columbus. He was a mental health counselor having worked for the State of Georgia and the Salvation Army. Additionally, he owned and operated a number of shelters for recovering alcoholics. Mr. Mayo was active at Beallwood Church of God, was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the board of the Agape Center in Columbus. He was the widower of Janice Florine Mayo.
Survivors include five daughters, Cyndi Hardy and her husband, Richard of Phenix City, AL, Janice Stover and her husband, Bob, Debby Mayo, Connie Mills, Andora Duarte and her husband Jaime all of Columbus; one son, Frankie Mayo and his wife, Gabi of LaGrange; two sisters, Janet Patterson and Brenda Carroll both of Franklin, GA; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
