Columbus, GA- William E. "Billy" Rowe, Jr. age 81, long time resident of Columbus, Georgia died on Friday, June 27, 2014 in Blairsville, GA. A Graveside Service is scheduled at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, GA on Monday, June 30, at 10:00 AM With Dr. Frank Parr, pastor of Wynnton United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Sunday, June 29 from 5-7 pm. Mr. Rowe, son of the late William E. and Maggie Rowe, was born July 18, 1932 in Columbus. He was married to Elinor Sweat Rowe for 59 years before her death in 2011. Mr. and Mrs. Rowe attending the Goodwill Sunday School Class at Wynnton UMC. He was a graduate of Jordan High School and attended the University of Georgia before proudly serving his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Taladega during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the US Postal Service in 1987.
Mr. Rowe loved sports and family. He coached youth baseball and football for many years, touching the lives of numerous young people. Many of them became high school athletic stars and leaders in the community. Mr. Rowe is survived by one daughter, Elaine Miller and her husband Alan of Warner Robins, GA, two sons, Steve Rowe and his wife Michelle of Blairsville, GA and Ken Rowe and his wife Lisa of Dallas, TX.; six grandchildren Kathryn Collier and husband Tracy, Kevin Miller and fiancée Melissa Menzoff, James Rowe, Megan Rowe, and Michael Wassel, and Ali Wassel. One great grandchild Kimber Collier and another on the way. He is also survived by two sisters, Josie Tilson and Coot Peed.
Although he will be missed by family and friends we take comfort in knowing that he is now with his dear wife whom he dearly missed.
