Columbus, GA- Mr. Willie "Bro. Fat" Griffin of Columbus passed away Thursday at Muscogee Manor Nursing Facility. He was 80 years of age and resided at 3320 N. Lumpkin Road, Apt. 108.
The son of the late Mrs. Mattie Myles Stephens, Mr. Griffin was born in Columbus, GA on November 27, 1932. He was a U. S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a life-long and dedicated member of Fourth Street Missionary and was retired from Civil Services, Fort Benning, GA following 30 plus years of dedicated service. He'd also worked at Columbus Foundry where he served as president of the Steel Worker's Union, Southeastern Division. Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by three siblings, Carl Benning, Willie "Sonny" Benning and Mattie Staggers.
Surviving are: his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Jeanette Thomas Griffin; a son, Brian K. Freeman; a daughter, Valerie Arnnold; six grandchildren, Desi, Brianna, Antonio, Davonna (Jason),Tina (Zachary) and A.J.; a brother, George Benning (Patricia), a sister, Lessie Diane Stephens; a daughter-in-law, Salena Freeman; loving in-laws, Theresa Watkins (Bernice), Sharon Griffith (James), Kenneth Thomas (Evelyn) and Carl Thomas; a dear friend, Aaron Tolbert; devoted caregivers, Ann Turpin and Johnny Griswold; neices, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Griffin will be held Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 11:00am at the Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church with interment following in the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Reverend J.H. Flakes III pastor will officiate. The visitation will be held at the church Thursday morning beginning at 9:30 am. The procession will depart from the resident at 10:30 am the day of the service. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc. "A Touch of Dignity for Those Who Care."
