COL Cyrus Reyon Shockey (RET)

SHAWNEE, KS - COL Cyrus Reyon Shockey (RET), 98, passed away Aug. 16, 2013.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, from 7-8 p.m. followed by a funeral service on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Both will be held at the Monticello United Methodist Church, 23860 W. 75th St., Shawnee, KS.

Cy was born Feb. 8, 1915, on a farm near Elkhart, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella Shockey; brother, Edward; and sisters, Amanda, Leona and Irene.

Cy graduated from Illinois State University in 1939 and then taught high school in St. Anne, Ill. Cy was drafted into military service as a private in June 1941. Selected to attend Officer Training School, he was commissioned as an officer in 1942 and retired from the Army in 1970 as a Colonel. He was a graduate of the Armor Advance School, Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. Cy served as aide to General Robert Grow, Division Commander, 6th Armored Division under General George Patton, Commander of Third United States Army in World War II.

In 1948 he served on the staff for the High Commissioner of the US Zone, Austria. Although Cy was an Armor officer, he served as Commanding Officer of an infantry battalion during the Korean conflict and then served in the United Nations Military Armistice Commission in Korea. Cy was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Medal and the Silver Star for valor in action. His last tour of duty was as Professor of Military Science at the University of Iowa.

Following his retirement from the service, he worked as Business Office Director at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, retiring from that position in 1980. During his retirement he volunteered often and was fundamental in establishing the LifeLine program at Mercy Hospital.

In 1943, he married Elizabeth (Bette) Stadtman at Camp Cooke, Calif. Cy and Bette enjoyed 63 years of marriage before Bette passed away in 2006.

They are survived by their son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Shockey of Anaheim, Calif.; daughter, Barbara Royer of Shawnee, Kan.; four grandchildren: Brian Shockey, Stacy Wright, Jason Royer and Kevin Royer; three step grandchildren: Sara Lyons, Chris Bauer and Jef Holove; and thirteen nieces and nephews.

In 2007, Cy married Candace Eales. Cy is survived by Candace and her sisters and brothers-in-law, Cynthia and Wayne Sjoberg and, Beverly and Don Silvers; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Linda Eales; five nieces; one nephew and seven great-nieces and -nephews.

Cy and Candace enjoyed his last years traveling, playing golf and being involved in church and community activities.
