Clara Marietta (Briggs) Williams, age 90, deceased on April 23, 2013 at Joe Raso United Hospice Residence, New City, NY of natural causes. Clara was born the daughter of Clarence and Alice J. (Clark) Briggs on Oct. 3, 1922 in Liberty, New York. Clara graduated from Liberty High School and then furthered her education at Rockland Community College, obtaining an associate degree with honors. She moved to Sloatsburg, NY in 1956 from Liberty, NY and became the Village Clerk in 1960 and initiated the home postal delivery. Clara was then appointed Tax Assessor for the Town of Ramapo in Airmont, NY from 1966 until she retired in 1991. She was the second female tax assessor in the State of NY and initiated many new programs in the assessing field that NYS adopted, including the first 100% revaluation of real property in the nation. She was one of the first females to become a Rotarian and a member of the Paul Harris Fellows in Suffern, NY.
Clara has touched so many people with her kindness and generosity. She will live in all of our hearts forever! Clara was predeceased by her husband, Philip J. Williams, 6 sisters and 3 brothers. She is survived by her three children, William E. Soules of Ocala, Florida, Jo Ann Soules of Suffern NY, Craig D. Williams of Cornwall on Hudson NY, eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Arrangements will be made by Scarr Funeral Home located at 160 Orange Avenue, Suffern, NY 10901 (845-357-1137). Wake will be held on April 25, 2013 between 2:00 PM to 4:00PM and 6:00PM to 8:00PM and services will follow on April 26, 2013 at 10:00 am. Internment and burial will immediately follow services at Rural Valley Cemetery located at 706 Oakland Valley Road, Cuddebackville, NY 12729. In lieu of flowers donations to Joe Raso Hospice, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956 would be appreciated.
