Gilbert 'Gil,' J. DeSalvo, 70, Poughkeepsie, NY, formerly of Mahopac, NY, passed from this world on Friday, February 8, 2013, at his daughter's home in Dover Plains, NY, after a brief illness. Born on May 5, 1942, in his much loved Bronx, NY, to Constance and Gilbert DeSalvo, he retired from General Motors, Tarrytown, NY, in 1998 after 30 years of service. An avid coin collector all his life, he reinvented himself as a picker and dealer of antiques, coins and collectibles, and became a living legend at his beloved Sunday flea market, The Elephant's Trunk in New Milford, CT. He was a life long fan of his precious "Bronx Bombers," the New York Yankees baseball team. Gil is survived by his dear mother, Constance Desalvo, Stormville, NY, his loving and grateful daughter and son, Jayne Janecek of Dover Plains, NY, and Joseph G. DeSalvo of Boca Raton, FL, and by his loving partner and companion of the last nine years, Deborah J. Bein, Poughkeepsie, NY.
His large family mourns their loss, including son-in-law Arthur Janecek, grandchildren Robert, Ryan, Michael and Lauren Janecek, Dover Plains, NY, sisters Margaret D'Agostino, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Gloria DeSalvo, Mahopac, NY, Lucille Brady, Stormville, NY, and Patricia Wood, Hopewell Junction, NY, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, and numerous good friends far and wide.
Family and friends will celebrate his life at the Cargain Funeral Home, Mahopac, NY, on Tuesday, February 12, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; burial at Peach Lake Cemetery in Brewster, NY, will follow a funeral mass at St. John's Catholic Church, Mahopac, NY, on Wednesday, February 13, at 10:30 a.m. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in his memory to The Marvelwood School, Kent, CT (860-927-0047) where his beloved grandchildren are alumni and current students.
