Kojo Dei

AGE: 66 • New Rochelle

Professor Kojo Dei 64, of New Rochelle, NY died November 10, 2013. Kojo Dei was born July 1, 1949, in Kyebi, Ghana to John K. Dei and Mary Oforiwaa Twum Barima. He left Ghana to pursue college-level studies at Philipps University of Marburg/Lahn in Germany. He was awarded the degree of Master of Arts in Ethnology with minors in Religious History and Ancient History. He transferred to the United States to further his studies and in 1982, he enrolled at the Teacher's College, Columbia University, NY where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Professor Dei taught at several colleges and universities including Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; Malcolm-King College, NYC; College of New Rochelle, NY; and John Jay College of Criminal Justice where, he taught anthropology for more than 20 years. His colleague from John Jay College wrote: "To his students, Kojo Dei was regarded as smart, fair, and always available to them to talk after class. To his colleagues, he was known for his kindness, enthusiasm, and always cheerful personality." He is survived by his adopted sons, Nana Twum and Nana Yaw; brothers, Edwin and Kwadwo; sisters, Phyllis, Gladys, Vida, Agyeiwaa, Patricia, Olivia and Akosua; and several cousins, nephews and nieces. A viewing will take place at the funeral home on Saturday from 7 to 9 pm. A service will be held on Sunday at Wakefield 7th Day Adventist Church, Bronx, NY at 2pm.
