Robert J Deierlein, father of nine, of West Harrison died September 1, 2014 at home peacefully of natural causes. He was 86.
He was born in 1928 to Charles Richard and Loretta (Ecay) Deierlein and grew up in Pelham, NY. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from Iona College in 1952.
He married Katherine M. Kennedy on September 6, 1952 in Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle, NY.
Mr. Deierlein was an executive for a trucking company for 22 years and then a writer and consultant for the industry for 38 years. He was awarded the Silver Spark Plug, a trucking industry recognition from the TMC; The Forest R. MacFarland award from the Society of Automotive Engineers; and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Truck Writers of North America. He was on the Board of Directors of Safe Shops Tools Inc. Missoula, MT. He served as Chairman of the Citizens Committee for Water District #1 for 35 years and was a Commentator at St. Anthony's church in West Harrison, NY for 38 years.
He is survived by his wife and nine children: Mary and Ken Fitzpatrick of Ridgefield, CT; Charles and Jean of San Diego, CA; Robert and Sarah of Missoula, MT; Rita Ball of Oak Hill, VA; Susan of San Diego, CA; Jeanne and Jeff Tepper of Brewster, NY; Kathleen and Kevin Santoro of Ridgefield, CT; Thomas and Mary Beth of Garden City, NY; and William and Andrea of White Plains, NY. Brothers Edwin, Richard, and Charles predeceased him.
Also surviving him are 12 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson: Ken, Doug and Katie Fitzpatrick; Stephanie and Brendan Ball; Meredith and Kevin Santoro; Teddy and Harry Tepper; Robert, Thomas and James Deierlein; Great-grandson Connor James Fitzpatrick.
Arrangements are by McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett Funeral Home, 491 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains, NY 10605. Visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm Friday, September 5th. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony's in West Harrison, NY at 10:30 am Saturday, September 6th, with burial at Gate of Heaven cemetery.
