Roger F. Olsen, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 5, 2014 after a prolonged illness surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Port Chester, NY on December 12, 1933 son of the late Charles and Anna Olsen. He is survived by his wife, Gladys and three children, Roger, Jr. and his wife, Astrid Olsen of Stamford, CT; Christy and her husband, Steven Groglio of Garrison, NY and Cynthia and her husband Wayne Sevecke of Cortlandt Manor, NY. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren, Katherine Olsen, Charles Olsen, Andrew Olsen, James Detlefs, Christopher Groglio, Marissa Groglio, Mikayla Groglio, Karina DiPippo, Kyla DiPippo and Nicholas Sevecke. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Sharon and her husband Walter Redstone and two brothers- in-law Richard Smith and Donald Smith and wife Sue as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Robert and 3 sisters, Mary, Anna and Eleanor.
Roger served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1956 before marrying Gladys Smith in 1958. He then moved to Rye, New York in 1962 where he raised his family and served as a firefighter for The City Of Rye from 1963 until his retirement in 1988. During this period he also served as first President of Local 2029 of the International Association of Firefighters. Upon retirement, Roger and Gladys relocated to Cape Cod, MA where they enjoyed a wonderful retirement, traveled extensively and enjoyed the company of their many grandchildren.
Our family rejoices that we were able to have him in our lives for so many years and we will always remember him for the wonderful husband, father and grandfather he was. We will miss him deeply and know that he is at peace and watching over all of us always.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Graham Funeral Home at 1036 Boston Post Road in Rye, New York. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, January 9, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A mass will be held at The Church of the Resurrection in Rye, New York on Friday, January 10 at 10:00 am. Internment will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery on North Street in Rye, New York.
