The Guest Book is expired.
Ruth P. Berthold, 88, passed away peacefully, Friday, July 26, 2013. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Arthur J. Berthold. Ruth was born on September 27, 1924, in New York City to Abraham L. and Hazel S. Kaufman and grew up in Haverstraw, New York, with her three siblings, Dorothy Dvortzoff, Ethel Kaufman and Robert Kaufman, all deceased.
She graduated from Haverstraw High School at age 16 then attended the Mount Vernon (N.Y.) Hospital School of Nursing where she was licensed as a Registered Nurse. Ruth and her sister Dorothy, also an R.N., enlisted in the U.S. Army and together as Second Lieutenants served on the hospital ship, S. S. Hope, in the Pacific during World War II. She enrolled, under the G.I. Bill, at Syracuse University to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Nursing. There she met the love of her life fellow WWII veteran, Arthur J. Berthold.
Ruth's nursing career spanned 38 years. She worked in public health in the City of Syracuse and Ulster County, New York. Ruth was a school nurse teacher in Haverstraw and Nanuet public school districts and also worked for the Rockland County Boards of Cooperative Educational Services. Ruth retired from the George Miller School following her 55th birthday in 1979 but her committment to promoting public health continued with her 25 year participation in the "Nurse's Health Study" conducted by Harvard University until 2001.
Ruth was a natural caretaker and dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family. She was a voracious reader of books and 3 daily newspapers. She prided herself on being an informed voting citizen aware of all the major issues of the day, traits inherited from her mother, Hazel. For 44 years, she tended with Art's assistance her vegetable garden which yielded much more than what two health conscious individuals could consume. Weekly gifts of world famous Jersey tomatoes and other homegrown vegetables and herbs were most appreciated by neighbors, co-workers and relatives for years!
Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy, her four grandchildren, David A.J., Anna, Michael and Madeline, two sisters-in-law, Louise O'Brien and Helen Berthold and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth will be interred with her husband at Hackensack Cemetery during a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
