HARDING, CALVIN RAYMOND JR., M.D., passed away on Friday, January 25, 2013 at the age of 76.

Born and raised in Louisville, he grew up assisting his father run Harding's Pharmacy on Hike's Lane, where his father, Calvin R. Harding, Sr. also served as its pharmacist; his mother, Marguerite Roehm Harding was a nurse. Together, his parents shaped his values of deeply caring for the needs of others. The Harding family has been a significant part of the Louisville community for over 100 years.

A 1955 graduate of Louisville Male High School and a 1959 graduate of the University of Louisville, Dr. Harding then served briefly in the U.S. Army before returning to the University of Louisville to graduate from its School of Medicine in 1965. He completed his internship at the University of Iowa and residencies at the University of Florida and University of Louisville Hospitals.

He worked as an anesthesiologist at the former St. Anthony's Hospital, and several surgery centers with Dr. Morton Kasdan's hand surgery practice and then Norton Suburban Hospital before retiring after 35 years of health care service. He was a longstanding member of the American and Kentucky Societies of Anesthesiology. Dr. Harding was a highly respected and trusted physician, with his professional colleagues preferring him to treat their family members.

Through his hands and heart he touched thousands of people as an anesthesiologist; an avid hunter, fly fisherman, amateur artist; a trumpeter in The Male High School band that performed at President Eisenhower's Inauguration and later in The Doctors' Band.

Dr. Harding was fascinated with life and human behavior. He was intrigued by the integration of medicine, and technology to heal.

Throughout his life, he was an avid reader, a student of history, and actively curious.

To be Cal Ray's friend was a gift, as he gave his entire self to nurture and grow every personal relationship. He will be remembered as 'the kindest man of all".

He was preceded in death by his parents, by his first wife of 35 years, Linda Little Harding, and by his son, Calvin Raymond Harding III. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kemp Harding; by his daughter, Jennifer (Jenny) Harding; and stepson, Nick (wife, Julie) Titus; by his granddaughter, Rosannah Linda Moore; and by an extraordinary group of friends throughout the Louisville area and beyond, with whom he enjoyed hunting, travel, fine dining, personal visits, movies, and more.

His funeral service was held Monday, January 28, 2013 at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday at Highlands.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. Cal Ray Harding's name, to the or to The Daughters of the King (DOK) in care of St. James Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 433, Pewee Valley, KY, 40056.
