LEWMAN, CORDELIA "DEDE" SNOW, 88, died on January 3, 2014.
The daughter of Dr. Henry and Margaret Snow, she was born in Dayton, OH, and graduated from Oakwood High School in 1943. In 1947, she became the first woman to earn a degree in political science from Northwestern University.
After marrying Harry Lewman, she settled in Louisville. She earned her master's in political science at the University of Louisville while raising four children and managing the family's real estate and property management business.
Bright, free-thinking and exceedingly industrious, she was president of the Louisville chapter of Planned Parenthood, active in the League of Women Voters, and taught at the Urban Studies Center at the University of Louisville. She was a loyal supporter of the arts.
Dede's intellect, kindness, generosity and keen sense of humor earned her the respect and admiration of those who knew her.
Her son Harry preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Margaret Snow Lewman (Jonathan) and Elizabeth Cash Lewman; her son Peter Folger Lewman (Ashley); her four grandchildren, Curtis, Olivia, Emory and Sophie Lewman, and her sister Harriet Benedict of Cohasset, MA.
She was deeply devoted to her family, her encouragement and love brought great comfort to many.
Visitation will be noon - 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
