McPHATE, DENNIS, a former fighter pilot and physician who served in the United States Navy for 30 years before entering private practice, died on Wednesday, March 19, 2014. He was 70.

Captain McPhate flew F-4 Phantoms from the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War. Later, he served as a Flight Surgeon and an occupational health physician. In his retirement years, his dedication to golf had him at the course as many as five times a week.

He was a generous man with a big laugh and an easy way with people.

Captain McPhate was born in Denver, CO, to Baker Neely McPhate and Frances Elaine Estrick in 1943.

He was surrounded by his family when he died from complications following a staph infection at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, CA.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia; daughter, Erin Johnson; daughter, Shannon Vanorman; son, Michael McPhate; their spouses and nine grandchildren. They are all completely heartbroken and trying to be grateful for the 40 some years they had with him.

Services will be held at Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club, 200 Avenida La Pata, San Clemente, CA, on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 2 p.m. For more information, contact O'Connor Mortuary at (949) 581-4300.
