ALLEN, DON L., passed peacefully from this earthly life on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, following recently diagnosed cancer.

He was born January 24, 1931 to the late James Allen and Edna Brady Burton. He is preceded in death also by stepfather, Carl Burton; and infant sister.

Don grew up in the West End of Louisville and had great memories of popular Teen Clubs, where his lifelong love of big band music and dancing was kindled.

He was a proud veteran of the Coast Guard, serving in the Korean conflict. He retired in 1989 from American Synthetic Rubber Company, and his retirement was spent happily playing lots of golf with his buddies. He was an accomplished bridge player, and enjoyed playing at the Bridge Center, the Jeffersontown Senior Center, and St. Marks.

He was a member of Southeast Christian Church and volunteered with the CARE ministry in the 1900s. He had a caring heart and also volunteered with Hospice.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Ellen Clayton Allen; her daughters, Cheryll Gallohue (Steve), Cheli Samaras (Yiannis) and Debi Clayton; grandchildren, George and Elleni Samaras and Andrea Clayton; his sons, Michael (Barbara), Steve (Pat), Eric (Sherry) and Craig (Robyn); grandchildren, Justin, Travis, Ashley, Whitney, Alyssa, Kaitlyn Lawyer (Blake), Adrianne Marcum (Jordan) and Christopher; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Brock (Fred); and his devoted Yorkie, "Little Boy." He bequeathed his body to the University of Louisville Medical School. In keeping with his wishes to not have a traditional, sad funeral, there will be a Memorial Celebration of his life on Monday, May 21, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Fraternal Oder of Eagles, 3501 College Dr. in Jeffersontown, KY.

The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at both Baptist East P3 and Hosparus. They are awesome!
