KMETZ, DONALD R. M.D., 80 died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 24, 2012.

Dr. Kmetz was born in Canton, OH, attended John Carroll University and received the M.D. degree from Ohio State University in 1958 where he completed his training in pathology, pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology. He came to Louisville in 1965 as Assistant Professor of Pathology. He served as Chief of Pathology, Director of Laboratories, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, president of the Children's Hospital Medical Staff (1974), and Medical Director (1975-80) at Children's Hospital until 1980, when he was named Acting Dean of the School of Medicine.
In 1975, he was appointed Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Dean and Medical Director of Children's Hospital. He was named Vice President for Hospital Affairs in 1983 and in 1992 was appointed Vice President for Health Affairs. Dr. Kmetz retired with the title Emeritus Dean in 1998 after 33 years of active service to the University of Louisville. As Vice President for Hospital Affairs and Dean in the early 1980s, Dr. Kmetz negotiated an affiliation agreement with Humana Inc. to lease University Hospital, and later an agreement with University Medical Center, Inc. to manage University Hospital, which are considered milestones by medical historians who are knowledgeable about teaching hospital governance innovations. He served as U of L's founding member of the Louisville Medical Center Development Corporation, an organization which was established in partnership with the City of Louisville, Jewish Hospital HealthCare Services, Norton Healthcare, and University of Louisville Hospital to promote the Louisville Medical Center as a nationally recognized center of high quality health care delivery, research and education. His dedication enhanced the lives of many in the community.
Dr. Kmetz is survived by his wife, Joan Schurman Kmetz; his daughter, Laura; sons, Mike (Barbara), Thomas (Tammy) and John (Amy). His son, James Kmetz, preceded him in death. He was grandfather of Tyler (Sarah), Katie, Blair, Christian, Lillie, Daniel, John Price, Abby and Erin. Dr. Kmetz was proud of his family, ever supporting and encouraging their unique gifts.
Visitation for Dr. Kmetz will be at Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Road, Louisville, from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012. The funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 501 Cherrywood Road, Louisville, with burial at Cave Hill Cemetery.
