Fred E. Coy Jr. Obituary
COY, FRED E. JR, 90, of Louisville, passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, January 10, 2014.

He graduated from Fern Creek High School in 1942 then enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in 1943. His first assignment was in the European Theater of Operations where he flew 130 combat missions in a P-47 Thunderbolt in the 9th Air Force as squadron leader. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 20 Oak Leaf Clusters.

In 1945 he returned to the University of Louisville and obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1950. He was reactivated for the Korean Conflict. Dr. Coy specialized in Orthopedic Surgery, where he worked in private practice until 1989, during which he contributed much charitable time to Kosair Children's Hospital.

Dr. Coy was a founding member of the George Rogers Clark Press, a member and past president of the Eastern States Rock Art Research Association. He was a member of the American Heritage Council and the Old Mill Association. Dr. Coy was an active lecturer and published author. He was an expert on Kentucky's Native American petroglyphs and passionate about their preservation and documentation. He was also an authority and frequent lecturer on Kentucky wildflowers.

Dr. Coy is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Emily Ellison; his son, Dr. Fred E. Coy III (Nancy); his daughters, Karen Coy Hinkebein (Dale) and Kim Schwartz (Paul); and grandchildren, David, Eric and Sarah.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Westport Road Church of Christ, 4500 Westport Rd. Louisville, KY. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Ln.
