Harold D. "Buddy" Haller M.D. Obituary
HALLER, HAROLD D. "BUDDY" M.D., 82, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014 at his home.

He was a 1949 graduate of Fern Creek High School and was later inducted into the first class of the Fern Creek High School Hall of Fame. Raised a Seventh-day Adventist, he attended Southern Missionary College for a year and in 1951 he graduated from the Louisville School of X-ray Technicians.

He joined the U.S. Army and served from 1953-1955 and served in the Reserves until 1961.

Upon discharge in 1955, he attended the University of Louisville, earning a B.S. in Biology and M.S. in Radiation Biology. He taught mathematics at Durrett High School, then attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine, graduating in 1963. His residency was at Baltimore City Hospital, with a Meade Johnson Award for Graduate Training in Family Practice. He returned to Buechel / Fern Creek area in 1965 and practiced medicine there for 40 years. He was the first residency trained family physician in KY and was a charter member of the American Board of Family Practice. He pursued his love of geriatrics as medical director of Westminster Terrace Nursing and Retirement Home for over 37 years, receiving the Better Life Award in patient care by the KY Association for Health Care Facilities. His life-long of teaching was exemplified by serving as Associate Clinical Professor at the University of KY for 10 years and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Louisville where he received a 25 year award for service and the William T. VonderHaar, M.D. Excellence in Teaching Award. He served on numerous boards and committees of many local hospitals including St. Joseph's Infirmary, Jewish, and Suburban where he also served as former president of the medical staff and received the Paul Gross Award for service to community and hospital. He served as past president of both the Jefferson County and KY Academies of Family Practice. In 1987, he received the Kentucky Academy of Family Practice Citizen Doctor of the Year Award and served as delegate of the KY Medical Association to the American Medical Association for 10 years.

His joy was serving the community in family practice. He was also an avid world traveler and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He enjoyed gardening, nature, beekeeping, SCUBA diving, fishing, playing cards, horse racing and U of L athletics.

He was loved as a husband, father, grandad, and physician.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles C. "Chris" and Helen Conn Haller; and brother, C.C. "Christy" Haller, Jr.

In 1957, Harold married his neighbor and sweetheart, Glenda Marie Papon.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Dr. H. Dale Haller, Jr. (Wendi) and Dawn Farmer (J. David); grandchildren, Eric, Jason and John Farmer and Alexis and Addison Haller; and sister, Linda Bogard (Donald).

His funeral service is 1 p.m. Thursday at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service.
