SELLERSBURG - Smith, James (Jim) C., died peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 8, 2014. He was 84. Jim was the only son of Alberta and Houston Smith. Houston died when Jim was 11. Alberta later married Quincy Buttorff. Jim was a proud Sellersburg resident all his life. A graduate of Silver Creek High School, Jim later attended Indiana University before joining the U.S. Marines in 1946. He served three years as a marine and was granted an honorable discharge on July 18, 1949 as a sergeant. After leaving the service, Jim took over the family restaurant business in Sellersburg. Formerly known as "The Wheel Cafe," Jim razed the building in the 60's and replaced it with what was to become one of the finest restaurant establishments in the Clark County area, drawing loyal customers from miles around. After selling the restaurant, Jim later purchased another restaurant in Hamburg, IN, subsequently retiring for good and selling that establishment to his son, Neil, who with his wife, Patty, has carried on the tradition in the restaurant business, now as "The Fireside Grill." Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Aline Smith (formerly Popp), and five of his six children, having lost his oldest daughter, our beloved Denise M. Smith in 2006. Surviving children include Lana M. Green (wife of Steve Green), James "Kirk" Smith (husband of Nancy Smith), Neil D. Smith (husband of Patty Smith), Craig S. Smith, and Amy Spalding (wife of Greg Spalding). Grandchildren include Jessica Green, Casey Green Erhart, and Michael Green; Stephanie Smith Stemle, Lauren Smith VanCleve, and Ryan Smith; Matthew Smith and Laura Smith; and Benjamin Hatfield, Nicholas Spalding, and Adam Spalding. Great-grandchildren include Luke Stemle and Kimberly Erhart.
