GROTE, JIM JR., 59, of Louisville, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
Jim was an avid storyteller and cherished the opportunity to share his gift with the many children in his life. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. His lifelong commitment to the homeless and others in need was sustained by always seeing the best in others. He was an academic who didn't take himself too seriously, a man who loved and was loved by many, someone who means more than these words on this page can express. Jim's work ethic and compassion with others was unmatched.
Jim was an award-winning journalist, a certified financial planner, and a professor at the University of Louisville. He was a respected development officer for numerous Catholic organizations and particularly enjoyed his eight years serving the Catholic Chancery. He was widely published in spiritual, academic, and financial journals, and authored several books.
Jim (Paul James, Jr.) was preceded in death by his parents, Paul James Sr. and Mary Jo McIntosh Grote.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Mary Jane "Sissy" (Durbin) Grote; two children that he dearly loved: a daughter, Rachel Grote, and son, Mark Grote of Louisville, KY; a sister, Paula Grote Livingston (Greg) of Cincinnati, OH; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held in his honor Monday, May 6, 2013, at 1 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1960 Bardstown Road, with visitation immediately preceding the Mass from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the church. Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Donations may be made in Jim's memory to The Catholic Worker, 36 East First Street, New York, NY, 10003.
