GIESEL, LOUIS OSCAR JR., M.D., 86, of Louisville, died September 27, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Norma Newkirk Giesel.

He was a graduate of duPont Manual High School and the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He was a member of the Woodcock Society, Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and Phi Chi fraternity. He took a fellowship at the Child Study Center at Yale University and served in the Public Health Service in Oklahoma. He was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society and served as president of the Louisville Pediatric Society. He was a pediatrician in private practice for over 30 years in Hikes Point.

He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, USA, moderator of the Synod of the Mid-South, board chairman of St. Matthews Area Ministries, and enthusiastic member of Central Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his loving companion, Virginia Copenhefer; daughter, Dr. Ann Elizabeth Giesel (Malcolm Jollie) of Seattle, WA; sons, Louis Courtney Giesel (Terri Wood) of Louisville, Dr. John Newkirk Giesel (Dr. Emily) of Indianapolis, IN, and James Austin Giesel (Grace M.) of Louisville; and grandchildren, Malcolm and Owen Jollie, Lincoln Giesel, Henry, Nancy and Sarah Giesel, and Austin, Margaret and David Giesel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2013, at Central Presbyterian Church, 318 W. Kentucky St., with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane.

Memorials may go to Cabbage Patch Settlement House or Central Presbyterian Church.
