MATHEWS, MALCOLM R. "MACK" JR., 90, died November 26, 2013 at VA Medical Center.
A native of Charleston, WV and the son of Malcolm R. "Mack" Mathews Sr. and Elizabeth N. Connell "Tibby" Mathews, he was a graduate of Northwestern University, trained in Navy officer's reserve and served later as president of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served as a Navy commissioned officer throughout the Pacific in World War II. During Korean conflict, he served on staff of Commandant, Third Naval District, as assistant press officer.
In 1948 he was assistant advertising manager for Brown Forman Distillers. He was an active realtor-broker since 1963-2008 and founding member of National Association of Realtors Appraisal Section. He served as director and vice-president of Louisville Board of Realtors in 1980. He was a founding board member of Wellspring House, Inc., also on board of three other mental health charities, in cooperation with KY. Seven Counties Services. He was also a member of General Society of Colonial Wars.
Survivors include his wife since 1948, Frances L. "Frankie" Peter Mathews; three sons, Dr. "Mack" R. Mathews III (Karen), medical director oncology, Kingsport, TN, Robert Peter Mathews (Ellen), electrical engineer with Air Force civil service, San Antonio, TX and Charles S. "Chuck" Mathews; brother, Robert N. "Bud" Mathews, Southern Pines, NC; two grandsons, Jeffery, DMD and Scott; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca.
His memorial service will be held noon Monday at St. Matthew Episcopal Church, 330 N. Hubbards Lane, with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation is 10:30 a.m.-noon Monday at church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pearson's.
