Hummel, Sister Margaret Ann,
a sister of Loretto, died peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Loretto Motherhouse.
Margaret Ann was the daughter of Norbert Daniel Hummel Sr. and Margaret Maloney Hummel. She and her twin sister Rose Marie were born on St. Patrick's Day in 1932. A native of Louisville, she attended St. Benedict Grade School, Loretto High School and earned her bachelor's degree from Ursuline College, now Bellarmine University. She received her master's degree from Villanova University.
Sister Margaret Ann was previously a member of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy in Charleston, SC. While there she served 12 years as Mother Superior. During this time she was also in charge of operations of St. Francis Hospital in Charleston. Sister Margaret also worked at Bellarmine University and the University of Notre Dame in a program for religious leadership and spirituality.
In 1988 she transferred her affiliation with the sisters to the community of Loretto, where her two older sisters were members. Upon acceptance with the Sisters of Loretto, she worked in the Development Office in Denver, CO. She has been retired to the Motherhouse for the past few years.
Preceding her in death other than her parents were her sister, Sister Mary Jane Hummel, a Sister of Loretto; and her twin sister, Rose Marie Thomas (Rudolph Delphin Thomas), also deceased.
Sister Margaret Ann is survived by her sister, Sister Patricia Hummel, a Sister of Loretto; her brother, Norbert Daniel Hummel Jr. (Jane Carroll); Sister Ellen Hummel, a member of the Medical Mission Sisters in Philadelphia, PA; 14 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and her caring religious community.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at the Loretto Motherhouse Chapel, Nerinx, KY.
