Akers, Michael Steven,
passed away on Saturday July 12, 2014 at approximately 2:02 p.m. at University hospital, with his loving wife, Jean Akers, holding his hand and surrounded by family.
Steve was born in Clarksville, IN, on April 14, 1947, he served as a Captain in the United States Army, was a Vietnam Veteran and a Graduate from the University of Louisville. He and Jean met in Washington, DC, in 1967, while he was stationed in the army and she was a flight attendant. They were married on March 7, 1970 and moved to Louisville, KY in 1973 to raise their family. He spent the majority of his working years in management in the manufacturing industry.
In recent years, his favorite moments were spent playing with his three grandchildren, fishing with his brother, watching UL sports, and being with family. He also loved music, had recently learned to play the guitar and was a member of the singing group Voices of Joy, for over 20 years. He will be remembered for his bright smile, warm hugs, silly sense of humor and his always willingness to lend a hand.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Jean Akers; daughters, Erin Wilson and Rebecca Andrada (Shawn); grandchildren, Jordan, Tyler and Ethan; brother, Larry Akers (Carol); sister, Jan Thomas (Ron); brother-in-law, Ron Johnson (Wanda); sister-in-law, Lois Kaufman (Dave); along with several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will take place at Unity of Louisville, 757 S. Brook St., Louisville, KY, 40203.
Visitation: Thursday July 17, 2014 4-8 p.m. and Friday July 18, 2014 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Memorial service: Friday July 18, 2014 at 1 p.m. for family and close friends.
