JEFFERSONVILLE - Coleman, Paul Bye Jr., 77, died peacefully March 21, 2014 in Richmond, VA, with his wife and children by his side.
He belonged to Boy Scout Troop #1 where he attained the rank of Life Scout. Paul was a member of DeMolay and Wall Street Methodist Church. He served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserves 4th Tank Battalion, 32nd Armored Regiment stationed in Fort Knox, KY. and reached the rank of sergeant first class.
Paul began his career in sales at Belknap Hardware and Manufacturing in Louisville and was later employed by Crawford Manufacturing in Richmond. He formed his own company, Fortex Corporation which dealt in home textiles and enabled him to travel the world. After retiring from Fortex, he became part owner and general manager of Virginia Motorsports Park. When he retired from VMS, he volunteered at various Richmond hospitals where in 2011, he was voted the "Volunteer of the Year" just as in 1948 he was voted the "Paper Carrier of the Year" at the Evening News in Jeffersonville. Paul was an avid reader and a student of history, particularly World War II. He enjoyed collecting muscle cars and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Fishing and cheering on his Indiana Hoosiers were his favorite pastimes. Paul believed in investing in the lives of others. He provided for, encouraged, nourished, and protected his family. As a successful businessman, he was able to devote many resources to advocate local schools. Paul applied his talents to each part of his life so that he could improve the lives of others. His family is blessed to have been a part of the life of such a fine man.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Salome Souder Coleman; children Paul Brian Coleman (Cynthia) and Kay Coleman Lee (Michael), all of Virginia; his mother Mabel H. Gedling of Jeffersonville; sister Carolyn C. Carter of Jeffersonville; grandchildren Melissa Lynn Coleman, Kelsey Brenna Lee and Brendan Jack Lee; nieces Susan Carter Downey (Keith) and Elizabeth Carter Cherry (Steven); great-nephew Gabriel Allen Downey; and a great niece, Caitlin Ann Cherry.
Paul was preceded in death by his son Bruce Coleman; father Paul Bye Coleman Sr.
A private ceremony will be held where his cremains will be buried in the Coleman family plot in Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville.
