BEARD, RALPH, 79, of Louisville, died Thursday, November 29, 2007. Ralph was born in Hardinsburg, KY, but lived in Louisville most of his life. He was one of Kentucky's finest athletes, attended Louisville Male High School, where he lettered in four sports, and led his basketball team to the State Championship in 1945. He attended the University of Kentucky and was named All American three years, was Collegiate Player of the year twice and was an Olympic gold medallist for the US in the 1948 Olympic Games. Ralph went to the NBA and was named All NBA First team in 1951. He was a member of Beargrass Christian Church. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Bettye (Scott) Beard; his children, Jill Hubbuch, Mike and Scott Beard, their spouses; and six grandchildren. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Pearson-Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, in Middletown. The family will receive visitors from 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
