WOOD, SUSAN ANDREW, 85, of Louisville died peacefully Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Baptist Health.
She was born in Hopkinsville, KY, daughter of Ruth Nicholson and Ashley Andrew. She graduated Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University.
She moved from Palm Beach, FL to Louisville in 1965, where she raised three children as a single parent. From 1967 to 2000 she taught K-3 math at St. Francis in the Fields School. She was a progressive and innovative teacher, pioneering the hands-on Math Lab. Personalizing her approach to each student, she believed in teaching children reasoning and thinking rather than rote memorization. Her ability to reach young children and open the world of mathematics was deemed magical. Her second and third graders performed basic programming on the "new" Apple IIE computer. Among others, she taught Math Lab Workshops to University of Louisville, Indiana University students, teachers in the Louisville and Jefferson County Schools.
She was preceded in death by her siblings Betty Dozier, Babs Carlson, Jim Andrew, and her sweetheart, Marion Smith of Nashville, TN who died August 19, 2013.
Survivors include her daughters, Betty Wood (David Roston) of Acton, MA, Leslie Wood (Fredda Paul) of Eastport, ME and her son, Tom Wood (Anne Wood) of Austin, TX. She had four grandchildren, Noah and Ethan Roston and Elizabeth and Andrew Wood.
She is remembered for being a sweet and loving person and was a beloved resident at Belmont Village for the last several years of her life. She will be sorely missed by her friends and family.
A service will be held 2 p.m Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckinridge Lane. Burial service will be Sunday, September 1, 2013 at 2 pm at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville.
