TORSCH, THEODORE HENRY, died Monday, August 26, 2013.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born March 30, 1922, in Louisville, KY to William B. Torsch and Rosella (Hartman) Torsch, and the youngest of five children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Leonard); his parents and siblings; and his son, Theodore Allen Torsch.
He leaves behind his two granddaughters, Stephanie Torsch-Ng and husband, Kenneth Ng of Norman, OK, and Sarah Torsch of Shelburne, VT; one great-granddaughter, Talia Torsch-Ng; a daughter-in-law, Vicki Torsch Woolfson of S. Burlington, VT; and niece, Sherry Aileen Torsch of Louisville, KY.
His childhood was spent in Louisville. As a young adult, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Boatswain's Mate in the Pacific during World War II. During this time he was aboard the USS Astoria, which sank in the Coral Seas, and participated in the Battle of Saipan. Upon leaving the Navy, he joined the Coast Guard and served in Cuba until the end of the war. He and Dorothy were married August 21, 1944.
Upon returning to Louisville he worked for the Louisville Fire Department until his retirement; then worked as a Deputy Fire Marshall for the State of Kentucky. After this, he worked for Churchill Downs until failing health in his 80s required him to stop. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends and participating in his church community. He was an avid golfer, biker, and walker. Dena and Jim Thurmond were special friends who provided assistance and friendship during his final years and were much appreciated.
Funeral services will be held at Joseph E. Ratterman & Son Funeral Home, 7336 Southside Drive on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery, 4400 Bardstown Road.
