SCHWIETZ, THOMAS E. COL., USAF, (RET.) 81, of Shelbyville, formerly of Louisville, died Friday, October 19, 2013, at his residence.

A native of Saint Paul, MN, he was the son of the late Stephen and Elizabeth Kantack Schwietz.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Eric Michael Schwietz M.D.; and five of his six older siblings.

He served as a pilot and air commander with the United States Air Force from 1955 through 1984, where he received numerous decorations including Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star Medal. He earned an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, Masters of Science degrees in Public Administration in 1964 and International Affairs in 1971 from George Washington University. He also attended the National War College from 1970 to 1971. In 1990 he earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisville School of Law. Upon graduation from law school he served as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for Jefferson County, and was a partner in the Louisville law firm of Keats and Schwietz from 1994 until his retirement in 2008.

He volunteered with the AARP as a tax return preparer and had a life-long passion for golf - starting when he was the Minnesota State Junior Champion during his senior year in high school. A Catholic by faith, his memberships have also included The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the Kentucky Bar Association and the Louisville Bar Association.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Emery of Shelbyville; his son, Thomas E. Schwietz, Jr., of Winchester, Virginia; his daughters, Leigh Anne Schwietz M.D., of Asheville, North Carolina, Teresa Jane Schwietz Reed of Memphis, Tennessee and Monica Elizabeth Schwietz Smith of Hamilton, Virginia; his stepsons, Stephen C. Emery of Westport, Kentucky, and Matthew T. Emery M.D. of East Grand Rapids, Michigan; his stepdaughter, Mary Jessica Emery Smith of Aurora, Colorado; his grandchildren, Seth, Tommy, Zoey, Nick, Eric, Jake, Roxanne, Katherine and Jens; his seven step-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Ann Stuart of McCook Lake, South Dakota; and his former spouse, Ethel B. Schwietz of Asheville, North Carolina.

The date and time of the memorial service will be posted on the website of the Hall-Taylor Funeral Home of Shelbyville. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the University of Notre Dame Undergraduate Scholarship Fund.
