CHELMSFORD -- Donald Douglas Burns, 87, a resident of Chelmsford and former resident of Lowell, died Thursday, November 28, 2013 with his loving family by his side, following a brief battle with cancer.

He was the husband of the late Jane (Mills) Burns, who died in 1998.

He was born in Lowell on December 16, 1925, and was a son of the late Douglas Donald and Rosetta (Weir) Burns. He received his education in Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School.

Donald served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

Prior to his retirement, he was part owner and bookkeeper for many years at Minuteman Publications.

Following retirement, Donald kept busy working at AJ's Variety Store in Chelmsford. In his free time, he was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing golf.

He was a longtime active member of Eliot Presbyterian Church in Lowell, where he was an Elder, past Treasurer, and member of the choir. He was also a life member of the William North Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Lowell, a member of the Aleppo Shriners in Wilmington, and a member of Brunswick Men's Bowling League in Lowell.

He is survived by his three daughters, Barbara Moores of Lowell, Elizabeth Jones and her husband, Allan of Chelmsford, and Ellen Irving and her husband, John of Chelmsford and Paris, France; nine grandchildren, Jane Moores and her partner, Lynn Copp, Chad Moores, Jaime Tousignant, Michael Tousignant, Stephanie Jones, Allan Jones, Jenna Antonelli, Christopher Irving, and Brian Irving; a great-granddaughter, Cynthia "Thia" Moores; a sister, Eleanor Gruber and her husband, Phil of Newport News, VA; a brother, David Burns and his wife, Adrith of Houston, TX, sister-in-law, Ann (Mills) Mortham of Palmetto, FL; former son-in-law, Arthur Moores of Lowell and many nieces and nephews. He was also the grandfather of the late Cynthia Moores, who died in 1986, and the brother of the late Robert Burns.

The Burns family would like to thank the staff of the VNA & Hospice of Greater Lowell, Arthur Moores, and Daniel Jones for the wonderful care that they provided to Donald.

BURNS -- DONALD. Visitation will be held at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD on Tuesday from 4 until 8 pm. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 9 o'clock at the Eliot Presbyterian Church, 273 Summer St., Lowell. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment will be private.
