NEW BERN, NC -- Earl J. Sidney, 77, of New Bern, NC, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, North Carolina, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Hartford, CT and attended Bloomfield, CT public schools, graduating in 1953. Earl joined the US Marine Corps in 1953 serving on the USS Pocono, USS Mt. McKinley and the USS Mt. Whitney. His sea duty was mainly conducted in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Earl was released from active duty in July 1958 and remained in the Marine Corps Reserve until his discharge in July, 1961.

After leaving the Marines, Earl joined Raytheon Company at Shawsheen Andover, MA; North Dighton and finally in the Lowell, MA plant. This began a career in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering which lasted over 34 years. Utilizing the GI Bill he graduated in 1964 from Merrimack College with a degree in Business. Earl worked on a variety of missile systems including Minuteman, Hawk, Sparrow, Sidewinder, Phoenix, AMRAAM and Stinger.

After retiring from Raytheon in 1992 Earl took advantage of his long time interest in history and began a second career as an archaeologist. He became certified by the NH Conservation and Rescue Archaeology Program. Earl taught archeology workshops as part of the anthropology class at Plymouth State and wrote three unpublished manuscripts, one of which was presented at Northeastern Anthropological Symposium at Plymouth Sate College, Plymouth, NH.

In the summer of 1997, Earl and his wife Eileen moved from their homes in Pelham and Ashland, NH to North Carolina to be in a warmer climate.

Earl was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Karp in 2001, and his son Robert Sidney in 2008.

Earl is survived by his wife of 39 years, Eileen (Fennell) Sidney; daughters, Carole Hoerner and husband, Jeffery of Manchester, NH: Linda Cardoza and husband, Charles of Merrimac, MA; stepsons, James M. O'Brien and his wife, Mary Ann of Lowell, MA, Thomas E. O'Brien and his wife, Kathleen of Windham, NH; son-in-law, Gary Karp and his wife, Janet of Holderness, NH, daughter-in-law, Laurie Sidney of Salem, NH, brother, Alan Sidney and his wife Janet, of Weare, NH; 11 grandchildren; and many dear friends of New Bern, NC.

We also wish to thank the medical staff at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina for their outstanding care for Earl, and for their compassion and support to the family.
