formerly of Lowell Well-known Local CPA

CHELMSFORD -- Ernest G. "Ernie" Dixon Jr., a longtime resident of Chelmsford, formerly of Lowell, died February 8, 2014, at home, with his loving family at his side, aged 81 years. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline "Jackie" (Kelley) Dixon, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage.

Born in Lowell, November 20, 1932, the oldest of three children born to the late Ernest G. Sr. and Bernice (Roberts) Dixon. He received his early education in the Lowell school system and graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1950. He received a Bachelor Degree in Accounting from Bentley University, and attended graduate studies at both Suffolk and Boston University.

He was a lifelong, active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where, over the years, he served as Treasurer, Moderator and Deacon, and upon retiring, was granted the title of Treasurer Emeritus.

A highly successful Certified Public Accountant, Mr. Dixon founded the firm of Palaza, Dixon and Rust in 1965, currently practicing as Sullivan, Dixon & Co., P.C., where he remained an active partner until illness forced his retirement.

He was a Fellow of the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants, a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, founding President of the Merrimack Valley Estate and Business Planning Council, President and Trustee Emeritus of the Merrimack River Valley House, President of the Greater Lowell YMCA, President and member of the Board of Directors of the Children's Home of Lowell, Director of the Lowell Humane Society, President of the Ministry-at-Large, and a member of the Board of Trustees and Auditors of the Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank. He was also a member of the William North Lodge A.F. & A.M. and the Yorick Club.

In 1966, Ernest joined the Lowell Rotary Club, District 7910, where he served as President from 1971-1972, and was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. One of his most memorable experiences was having the honor of awarding his parents and wife with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow medal. Over the years, he served in many capacities, including District Treasurer, District Governor Designate, District Conference Chairman, Trustee of the District Foundation, Foundation Chairman, and Club Advisor. In 2007, District 7910 presented Ernie with its Life Achievement Award, only the second such award ever made by the District.

He was an avid New England Pro Sports fan, and also enjoyed camping at Tuxbury Pond in South Hampton, NH, taking trips to Foxwoods, and vacationing in Las Vegas, Aruba and Bermuda.

While his professional accomplishments were many, Ernie was most proud of his family, especially his cherished grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and civic leader, who will always be remembered for his integrity, generosity, and passion for serving others above all else.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ernest G. Dixon III of Dracut, and Matthew Dixon of Chelmsford; two grandsons, Shawn Patrick Brennick of Chelmsford, and Ernest G. "Buddy" Dixon IV of Dracut; a granddaughter, Linda Lou Dixon of Dracut; one sister, Dorothy Cheney and her husband John E. of FL, two sisters-in-law, Maryann Koller of Dracut, and Beverly Ann McDermott of Billerica. Dear friends, Lisa M. Brennan of FL, Michael and Beverly Ansaldi of Hudson, NH, and Renee (Caron) Dixon of Dracut. He was the brother of the late Mabel E. Bennett, and brother-in-law of the late Keith Bennett, Sally McGowan, Francis J. Kelley, Sister Joseph Margaret Kelly (Sisters of Charity), Allison Faggart, Margaret Kelley, and Joan P. Kelley.
