Capt. James M. Gookin
Lifelong resident of Dracut;

Beloved husband, father, grandfather,

great-grandfather, and brother

DRACUT -- Capt. James M. Gookin, 78, died at his home on Thursday, October 10th, 2013, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was the beloved husband of Barbara A. (Whitman) Gookin, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.

James was born in Lowell, MA on June 16, 1935, a son of the late Alice (McAlpine) and James L. Gookin. He received his education in Dracut and was a graduate of Dracut High School. After graduation, James proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He later went on to receive his Bachelor's degree from Northeastern University.

For many years James served his community as a Captain on the Lowell Police Department retiring in 1992, and previously as a Dracut Policeman, until transferring to Lowell in 1973.

Jim was a member of the Middlesex Retirement Board, LRTA and served on the Dracut Housing Authority, as well as a selectman for the town of Dracut. He was also a member of the Elks and American Legion, as well as a proud member of the Longmeadow Golf Club, and the South Florida Emerald Society.

Jim was the proud and prior owner of O'Hara's Tavern in Dracut, and traveled many times to his beloved Ireland to visit family there, as well as to his second home in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Jim was a wonderful man, who was always willing to lend a helping hand. His smile lit up the room and he was always full of wonderful, great stories. Being a loyal friend to many, his absence will be felt by all for a very long time to come. His accomplishments are a testament to his character, being named Man of the Year in 1994.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his loving children, Kathleen Gookin Jedraszek of Haverhill, Donna Gookin Bragg and her husband, Robert of Camarillo, CA, and Annemarie Gookin Sampson and her husband, Brad of Wayland, MA; seven grandchildren, Julian Thibeault and his wife, Sarah of Nashua, NH, Michael Jedraszek of Beverly, Avery Hill, Madison and Sage Sampson, all of Wayland, and Liam Bragg of Camarillo, CA, as well as two great-grandchildren, Weston and Olive Thibeault of Nashua, NH; brothers, Robert Gookin and his wife, Gail of Salem, NH, and Daniel Gookin and his wife, Carol of Nashua, NH; many nieces and nephews; and a multitude of wonderful friends.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Joanne Gookin in 2002.
