U.S. Army Veteran of World War II
LOWELL -- James R. "Russ" Hurley, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died January 5, 2014, at Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus, aged 89 years. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorice (Welch) Hurley, the love of his life, who he missed deeply since her passing in 2010.
Born in Lowell, April 14, 1924, he was a son of the late John M. and Florence E. (Gendreau) Hurley. James received his early education in the Lowell school system and graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1942.
Mr. Hurley enlisted in the U. S. Army on December 15, 1942, serving with the 19th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. A recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal, he was Honorably Discharged on November 20, 1945.
A well-liked, professional bartender, Russ worked at the Cosmo in Lowell for over 20 years.
After proudly serving his country, he supported fellow veterans as a longtime, active member of the Walker Rogers Post 662, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lowell, where he had many good friends. Russ was an excellent pool player and enjoyed fast cars. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his cherished grandchildren.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon A. DeCisto of Chelmsford and Deborah E. Hurley of Wisconsin; a son, James R. Hurley II and his wife Christine (McNulty) of Lowell; and two stepchildren, Kathleen E. Wojcik and her husband George of Lowell, and Ruth E. Janeiro of Lowell. Two brothers, Edward R. Hurley of Dracut and Thomas Hurley of New Hampshire, and one sister, Jaqueline Baldwin and her husband George of Lowell. Five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the stepfather of the late Kevin M. Burgoyne and George R. Burgoyne, and brother of the late Cecil Sheldon, Ralph Hurley and Agnes Wilson.
