John Brewster Hamblet Sr.
Pathologist, Veteran; aged 100 Years

LOWELL -- Dr. John Brewster Hamblet, Sr., died peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on June 1, 2014 after a brief illness.

He was the beloved husband of Hope Gurney Hamblet for 66 years, loving father of Joan L. Hamblet of Portsmouth, NH; John B. Hamblet, Jr. of Lowell, MA; Elizabeth H. Gardiner (James) of Southlake, TX and Laura H. Burke of Ft. Mitchell, KY. He was the devoted grandfather of David and James Karlotski, Michael, Caitlyn and Christine Gardiner and Cullen and Connor Burke and uncle to Margaret H. Sarner of Newark, DE.

John was born in Lowell, MA on February 27, 1914, the son of Dr. Clement A. and Maud H. Hamblet. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Clement H Hamblet and his sister, M. Elizabeth Hamblet.

John was a graduate of Lowell High School, Harvard University and McGill Medical School. While serving as a medical officer in the US Army he was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). During WW II he served in France, Africa and China. He retired from the Army Reserves as Lieutenant Colonel.

Following active duty he served as the Chief Pathologist at Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati, OH for 27 years. After retirement, he volunteered at Hospice of Cincinnati and pursued his hobbies of gardening, beekeeping, genealogy and running. In 2008, he and Hope moved back to New England spending their time between their home in Hancock, NH and John's family homestead in Lowell, MA. John was a member of St Anne's Episcopal Church in his youth and most recently was a member at Pawtucket Congregational Church, Lowell. John touched many with his humility and compassion.

HAMBLET -- Memorial services will be held at on Thursday, June 12 at 10:00 AM at Pawtucket Congregational Church, 15 Mammoth Rd., Lowell, MA 01854. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Windows of Faith c/o Pawtucket Congregational Church, 15 Mammoth Rd., Lowell, MA 01854.
