Dr. Thomas J. Brennan Jr.
was Manchester, NH schools Superintendent

NEW LONDON, NH -- After a courageous nine month battle with cancer, Dr. Thomas John Brennan Jr., passed away on Wednesday, April 9th just before 5:30 am, surrounded by his loving family.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend, coach, and teacher.

He is survived by Wendy, his loving wife of 44 years, and their daughters Amy (husband, Chris Holsinger and daughter, Elizabeth), Catherine (husband, Stephen Girard and son, Finn Thomas), Jennifer, and Lindsay (husband, John David Lyman and son, John); mother, Rose Brennan; his brothers, Robert (wife, Janice and children, Keri, Casey, Kelly, and Christopher) and John (wife, Mary and children, Mark, Mollie, Patrick, Sean, and Maggie); and sister, Rosemarie.

He will be remembered for his joyous laughter, his great love for his family, and his passion for education. Tom was cherished by all, a giant in the lives of those who knew him. He was a dedicated educator and family man and somehow managed to balance both perfectly. His smile was quick - as was his wit - and, through the final days of his life, he carried himself with tremendous grace and dignity. His three beloved grandchildren - Elizabeth, Finn Thomas, and John - knew their doting grandfather as "Pops."

Tom spent his entire career work for education and to make the lives of everyone around him better. He was fortunate to work in many districts beginning in Haverhill (MA) and ending his career with his retirement from the Manchester School District in 2013. He also took a few years away from schools to work with CFH Associates. He loved his work with the Peterborough Middle School and Conant High School as well as the Kearsarge Regional District which first hired him as a Superintendent. He worked Manchester as both the Assistant Superintendent and later as the Superintendent.

Another full page would be needed to list his many accomplishments throughout his career. Tom was an educational visionary and often ahead of his time when it came to policies and consideration for alternative education. He was honored with many awards, commendations, and achievements - and served and lead on multiple committees and associations.

Constant and unflagging in his love for the family and friends he felt blessed to have, Tom's commitment to education similarly relentless.

The Brennan family wishes to express their unending gratitude to Dr. Matt Yurgelun and the teams at Dana Farber and Brigham & Women's for their incredible dedication and support.
