LOWELL -- Thomas J. O'Connell, 88, of Tewksbury, passed away after a brief illness, Friday, July 4, 2014 at Lowell General Hospital. He was the husband of Alice E. (Brennan) O'Connell with whom he celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary last November.
Born July 29, 1925, in Lowell and he was a son of the late Michael J. and the late Alice M. (Moran) O'Connell. He attended the local area schools in Lowell.
Mr. O'Connell proudly served with the United States Navy during World War II.
He was resident of Lowell until 1962, when he as a gifted carpenter built the family home in Tewksbury. He was a longtime member of the Irish American Club in Billerica and a member of the Lowell Firefighters Union. He loved spending time in the outdoors, mostly fishing and sailing. Thomas was employed for the City of Lowell as a Deputy Chief for the Lowell Fire Department for over 45 years before his retirement.
In addition to his beloved wife, Alice, he is survived by his four children, Michael T. O'Connell, M.D. of Tewksbury, Kathleen Keefe and her husband, Thomas of Pelham, NH, Patricia Racicot and her husband, Matthew of Amesbury, and Thomas P. O'Connell, M.D. of Gulf Breeze, Florida; and his two grandchildren, Nicholas and Emily Keefe both of Pelham, NH.
Thomas is predeceased by his beloved dog, Casie; and his sister, Ann Marie Cuttress who passed away in 2012.
